The Sound Gap: Early Sensory Signals

Medical headsets cut out the high and low sounds in a person’s voice, creating a “Sound Gap” that changes how doctors and nurses hear patients (Tech-Med Research Group, 2025). This makes a calm, worried mother sound “unstable” or “difficult” to healthcare workers, leading them to take her less seriously. When mothers are labeled as “anxious,” their children wait an average of 2 extra years to get tested for ADHD or Autism (Clinical Pediatrics Journal, 2023). Women are 50% more likely than men to get the wrong diagnosis for a heart attack because doctors think they’re just having a “panic attack” over the phone (World Economic Forum, 2024). In 2024, 1 in 4 women reported that their medical concerns were completely dismissed or ignored by staff during phone or video calls (Nurofen, 2024).
