Initial Misinterpretation

Early warning signals—ear pressure, sound sensitivity, mental fatigue—are routinely dismissed as “stress” or “needing a break” rather than recognized as signs of injury (Occupational Health Psychology, 2022). Workers are told to “manage stress better” or “take a vacation” while headset exposure continues unchecked. This delay allows the injury to progress from reversible early-stage dysfunction to permanent damage to the sensory system (Journal of Vestibular Research, 2019). The gap between when symptoms first appear and when they’re taken seriously averages 18-24 months, during which workers lose critical treatment windows (National Safety Council, 2023).
